Pericarp trimming
The relatively new concept of growing fruit in fruit walls and the professional care of such plantations using mechanical fruit wall pruning is a very interesting way of growing fruit. As in all commercially orientated agricultural operations, the question arises as to how the necessary work can be carried out as professionally as possible and in a cost- and time-saving manner.
How does pruning work work?
A conventionally planted orchard usually requires a relatively large amount of time and labour in order to be pruned properly and produce good yields. In addition, there is the risk of improper tree pruning by external labourers. For this reason, machine pruning is becoming more and more popular in appropriate systems. This saves a lot of time and labour while increasing yields. Fruit walls consist of fruit trees that are pruned to shape and form a long, narrow row - the fruit wall. Regular, mechanised fruit wall pruning ensures that the fruit wall is kept at the desired height and width. Due to the evenly parallel and row-like alignment of the fruit walls, fruit wall plantations are more reminiscent of vineyards than traditional orchards. If an existing orchard is to be converted to a fruit wall or a new fruit wall plantation is to be established, a number of factors must be taken into account. These include the orientation of the fruit wall in a north-south direction, the choice of a suitable fruit variety, the adaptation of the row spacing to the existing technology, etc. A very important aspect of planting and maintaining this type of cultivation is the professional and effective pruning of the fruit wall. Ultimately, a major advantage of the fruit walls is the fact that they can be maintained mechanically and in a time-saving manner.
Professional fruit wall pruning makes care easier
Instead of hiring labourers and sending them into the orchard with fruit shears, the farmer can prune the pericarp himself from the tractor in a short time. The specific branch structure of fruit trees requires a cutting unit that can also cope with thicker branches and at the same time protect the plant. The cut ends should be as clean and smooth as possible for fruit wall pruning. The ESM double blade in a special design has proven to be ideal for pruning the pericarp. The professional cutting unit is able to cut even thicker branches effortlessly and with little vibration, while at the same time protecting the plants. Both the amount of work and the yield can be optimised with this type of mechanical pruning with a professional ESM cutting unit.
