Knife guide arm

One of the central components of an oscillating cutterbar, alongside the blades and mower fingers, is the blade guide arm. Due to the intensive contact with the clippings and the general stresses involved in professional mowing, the blade guide arm, like all other components of a cutter bar, requires regular maintenance.

Regular inspection of the blade guide arm

As with all work carried out on a cutting unit, the utmost care and attention is required here! Only a correctly adjusted and well-maintained mower can deliver full performance and ensure a long service life for the components. The regular maintenance and cleaning work that must be carried out on every mower should therefore also include checking the blade guide arm. It is therefore advisable to also check whether the knife guide is optimally adjusted as part of the routine inspection of the mower knife blades. As the knife guide arm is designed differently depending on the cutting unit, its respective design must be taken into account. Always consult the relevant operating and assembly instructions for the cutting unit. As a general maintenance measure, greasable blade guide arms, for example, should be lubricated regularly with an environmentally friendly lubricant. Make sure that the cutter bar is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and plant fibres beforehand. Other basic maintenance measures for a bar mower include checking the guide clearance. If the guide play exceeds 1 mm, it should be adjusted to 0.2-0.3 mm in accordance with the adjustment instructions.

Checking the blades on the knife guide arm

It is important that the blades lie on top of each other without any play. Blades with worn mushrooms must be replaced in good time, as the blade guide arm cannot work safely on such mushrooms and the operation of the entire mower deck can be affected. It is also important to ensure that the blade guide arm is not bent. Only an unbent blade guide arm guarantees the correct contact pressure between the back of the blade and the back of the bar and therefore the optimum cutting performance of the mower. If it is unclear whether the blade guide arm is bent, a comparison should be made using a scaled sketch.
