There are sufficient groundwater reserves in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. However, there are regional differences in the availability of groundwater: In the eastern parts of the state, the proportion of potentially usable groundwater resources, which must be kept available to supply the population and protected at all costs, is significantly lower than in the western parts of the state. A monitoring network is used to sample 185 overview monitoring sites and 148 operational monitoring sites for plant protection products. In addition, 49 monitoring sites are sampled for the new EU nitrate monitoring network. In the area around Neubrandenburg, there are 2 monitoring sites where the threshold values for nitrate, sulphate and chloride have not been exceeded on a long-term average.
