Flail mowing
Flail mowing is a special form of mowing that owes its name to the flail mower's cutterhead fitted with so-called flails. Flail mowing with ESM cutterbars is used in particular when areas are extensively farmed and dense and difficult to mow vegetation is to be expected. In such cases, a mower equipped with flails is the right choice, as mowers of this type are also able to cut through stems up to 50 mm in diameter. In contrast to bar mowers, the blades on flail mowers are located in a housing. Today, flail technology is being replaced by oscillating cutter bar technology in many areas. The reasons for this lie in the significantly better fauna, flora and habitat balance of bar mowers and the corresponding protection of the environment.
Advantages of flail mowing
Mowers of other types are overtaxed in some situations or require mowing with great attention and care, which prolongs the work process. With flail mowers, there are no such restrictions and the mowing process can be carried out safely and without interruption. Another advantage of flail mowing is that, despite the robustness and high cutting power of the mowers, the clippings are distributed finely and evenly over the mowed area and can remain there as fertilising mulch. Flail mowing is therefore an important measure for maintaining the desired vegetation in a wide variety of work and application areas.
The very high cutting performance and resistance of the ESM blades make them suitable for demanding applications in commercial or municipal agriculture and forestry. But flail mowers are also the right choice for vineyards and orchards and wherever resistant vegetation is to be expected. In these sectors, performance, robustness and a reliable and versatile mower are of central importance. Good handling and user-friendly repair and maintenance behaviour are also required for these applications. Roadside greenery, which usually consists of vegetation of varying densities, can be mowed just as reliably with flail mowers as tree residues, densely overgrown meadows and plantations.
New developments in flail mowing
The development of flail mowers with remote control is interesting. Here, the user is additionally relieved and does not have to expose himself to any danger on particularly steep terrain. In this area, ESM's flail mower technology is favoured, as its high-performance components offer additional safety and reliability.
Mowing with a remote-controlled mower not only reduces the workload of the mower operator. Certain mowing situations can only be mastered with a remote-controlled mower. For example, extreme slopes can make hand-guided mowing impossible or at least extremely tedious and dangerous. A remote-controlled flail mower can also be an option for areas that are difficult to access. For example, it may not be structurally possible to work under ground-mounted photovoltaic systems with a man-guided mower. Flat, remote-controlled flail mowers are ideally suited for such mowing situations.
