Steep slope mower
Steep slopes pose an increased work risk for the operator of a motorised mower. Special performance is also expected from the mowing technology here and there are specific requirements for the mower. When mowing on steep slopes, as is often necessary in alpine farming, special steep slope mowers are therefore used that are designed for this extreme mowing situation. A steep slope mower must be selected according to particularly strict criteria so that the risk of an accident and the mowing effort are kept to a minimum.
Safety criteria for steep slope mowers
Safety on steep slopes depends on various factors that must be taken into account. The use of a steep slope mower should always be carried out by an experienced person who is familiar with the terrain and the mower. The size and design of the mower are further factors that are important on steep slopes. Steep slope mowers with a wide cutting deck are generally easier to handle on steep slopes. The bouncing behaviour of the wide mowers is reduced by the greater weight of the wide cutter bars, making them easier to operate. The centre of gravity is shifted downwards and the steep slope mower is able to cope with extreme gradients. The clippings also benefit from a wide cutterbar. The lateral projection of the cutter bar makes it easier to mow around bushes, trees or rocks at a greater distance. A steep slope mower with a wide cutting unit also makes it easier to mow dangerous areas, such as slopes where there is a high risk of slipping.
Steep slope mower with remote control
Due to the significantly increased risk of accidents when mowing steep slopes, remote-controlled models have also been available for some time. This type of steep slope mower takes the strain off the mower operator, as the steep slope mower can be controlled conveniently and safely from a distance. In this case, the driver is not exposed to emissions, vibrations and the generally difficult situation on steep slopes. However, the development of such remote-controlled steep slope mowers is still in its infancy and the "classic", hand-guided mower still dominates the market. The ESM cutting units are ideally suited for demanding use on steep slopes. The low-vibration operation and outstanding cutting power have a positive effect in this situation, as does the long service life.
